The Void
My mother has had a pen pal in Northern Ireland since she was in 2nd grade, and at some point they began exchanging Christmas presents for each others’ kids. They have yet to stop, though the youngest of each set of kids is well into adulthood. This year, I got a long, narrow calendar with scenes of Northern Ireland, with the days listed vertically: a number and then a horizontal line for every day. I’ve been writing a short description of a couple of things that happened every day, and have only missed a few days so far. It’s remarkable how 10 words or less can keep the days from falling anonymously into the void.

Nice! I got a t-shirt and some socks
Is it true that my mom’s pen pal is your mom’s pen pal’s sister? Or am I making that up?

You are not making that up; it is true! I forgot about that. Did you know I met Rosemary (my Mom’s pen pal) when I did my study abroad in Ireland?

(So, for those of you who are playing at home, Margaret’s mom is my mom’s sister, and they have pen pals in Northern Ireland who are also sisters.)

I did know that you met them. I remember a story about a baseball cap that your mom sent one year as a gift, and that they were amused by the hat because they don’t wear baseball caps. Also that you got fake doc martens while you were in ireland? I don’t know why I remember that…

Ha– they were Pittsburgh Penguins hats or something like that. I forgot about that.
My Docs were real, though!
