But it's not like the alcoholism is entirely the point. The point is, or should be at least, to see The Pogues with Shane singing. The fact that he will be drunk, for this is his way of operating in the world is more a sideshow than anything else. I went to see the show merely as a way to see music that I truly enjoy performed live. If Shane had been too soused to perform with any sort of competence then I would have felt shortchanged for a subpar performance. As it stands, yes he was drunk, but not enough to send the show flying off the rails. It's a fine line to walk, or totter in this case, but the band has seemed to come to grips with how best to handle it and I agree with Terri's take that it's better he be drunk and sharing the music than merely drunk.

All that being said, you didn't mention my monkey pantomime, you old poop.

John, I think Shane's alcoholism is real (it broke up the band multiple times), but it's become part of his image and the legend and his schtick.

I think it's the idea of alcoholism-as-entertainment that gave me a little pause.

I know absolutely nothing about any of these people, but I wonder: might he be partly (or entirely) acting? Strange are the ways of publicity.
