I'm going to have to agree with Ez about the Godspeed show. It was a huge disappointment for me... certainly not worth standing around freezing for an hour and a half. If the show had been amazing for me, I think I could have forgotten all about freezing my butt off.

Hmmm Now if only I could find that Screeching Weasel CD I have. Didn't they do the the william shatner song? I totally do not remember that concert. It must have been when I was in scotland, cause I would have gone.

Dude, speaking of suckage concerts, it not have been worse than the last Clinton concert I went to in Bloomington. I wanted the opening act college guys cover band to come back on, it was that bad. The funk was not strong that night.

I kind of suspected that TMBG might have gone down hill when they started doing so much theme music.

Hey, you made Universal Hub again. Good on ya! I saw TMBG back in 1993 at First Avenue in Minneapolis, and they were good fun back in the day. Their cover of the Edgar Winter Group's Frankenstein was rockin'. Also, Godspeed was awesome in 2001. It was standing in the freezing cold for 90 minutes before the show that sucked.

I was happy to be there.
It was my first time seeing them and I am glad that I did.
I can definitely understand where you are coming from, they did seem tired and it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but I am definitely glad I saw them.
Apollo Sunshine, on the other hand... sucked beyond all possible suckage.

Huh. I thought the show was great -- the only TMBG show I liked better was at the Orpheum, back in the '90s (I think -- I remember Frank Black opened for them, but I don't remember the exact date).

Of course they're not going to do the exact same show they did 18 years ago -- how dull would that be? What struck me was how much fun they still have playing live, and how much they love their fans. The only thing I didn't like were the blinding strobe lights into the audience -- those things hurt!

Yeah, I think we're all in agreement on that. The rock band is just... not right.

I've still never seen them, and I might never, except if I ever have kids someday I might take them to one of their kids' shows. I just listen to the songs, which is where the magic always has been for me: not in the performance, but in the interaction of the music with my life. Not having really heard anything post-Flood, I used the dial-a-song for the new millenium free mp3 thing and I really hated the songs I got. It's the rock band. I can't take it.

I wasn't fortunate enough to see them back in the day, and while my disappointment had a lot more to do with the fact that we missed a good chunk of the show because we were late, I can see how it lacked that seat-of-pants sort of wackiness and creativity that their shows probably had in the past. In their defense, though, they've been touring off and on for eight months. That can be tough for even the spring chickens of the music world, and these guys are no longer spring chickens. Also, it wasn't terrible. They didn't seem like assholes who no longer give a shit. They're still good guys, and they're still doing something appealing and original, relatively speaking. Last night it just seemed like they'd done this before--a lot, and they seemed a little tired. They probably seemed a lot more tired and spiritless to you than they did to some people, since you have your good memories of earlier shows to which to compare this one.

I felt the exact same way at a full band show they played several years ago... it was my first time seeing them since the duo days (when I was near obsessed, and reveled in the drum-machine, saxophone, accordian, stick-master madness), and I was terribly disappointed. So watered down, so lacking of any of the goofy, spontaneous charm they had.

Haven't seen them since, but still have huge affection for 'em. I just choose not to count that show, but your post brought it all back. Bummer, huh?
